- Chester Arthur was the second vice

- Three men held the office of president
in 1881; Hayes leaving office, Garfield elected and assassinated,
and Arthur succeeding to office
- Arthur ordered twenty-four wagons
full of furnishings discarded from the White House, and hired
Louis Tiffnay of New York to redecorate the Mansion
- Many valuables were discarded or went
to auction
- Since that time the White House has
been declared a National Museum thus safeguarding its possessions
- The most notable addition during the
renovation was the elevator
- A widower, he placed a portrait of
his deceased wife Ellen in the hallway of the White House, and
arranged for fresh flowers to be put under her picture everyday
- While President he was diagnosed with
Bright's Disease - a fatal kidney ailment
- Arthur denied reports of ill health,
and when he felt too fatigued to work doctors reported he had
a cold or just needed rest
- He died in the year following his
term of office
