- George Bush was the first vice president
elected directly to the office of president since Martin Van
Buren in 1836

- Shortly after becoming president,
Mr. Bush declared "No more broccoli on the White House menu"
which infuriated broccoli growers who sent tons of the vegetable
to the White House in a humorous protest
- The stash was given to various food
banks in the Washington area
- Broccoli was also forbidden on the
Air Force One menu, and the famous Reagan jelly bean snacks were
replace with pork rinds and a hot sauce dip
- During his term of office Saddam Hussein
[Iraq] invaded Kuwait, prompting military action known as "Desert
Storm"
- Although Iraqi forces were quickly
driven from the invaded country, Hussein remained in power, mush
to the dismay of many Americans
- As President, he resigned his life
membership in the NRA [National Rifle Association] when they
issued a statement critical of law enforcement officials
- During his presidential campaign he
promised "Read my lips, no new taxes"
- But during his tenure in office he
approved a tax increase, which coupled with a sagging economy
led to his re-election defeat in 1992
