- Coolidge became president Vice
President Calvin Coolidge upon the death of Warren Harding
in 1923
President Death in Office
- He was elected to a full term in 1924,
and was elibile to run again in 1928, but chose not to do so
- He and Lyndon Johnson, who declined
the nomination in 1968, were the only two vice presidents not
to seek two full terms after thier sucession to the presidency
- Coolidge often played practicle jokes
on the staff by ringing a buzzer to summon them and then hide
or leave the oval office
- He received a mechanical horse as
a gift and often rode it dressed as a cowboy, or sometimes in
his underwear
- Many jokes have been made about "Silent
Cal's" tight lip and lack of conversation
- When he died one reporter remarked,
"How can they tell."
- One of the more famous stories comes
from a White House gathering where a woman told the President
she just bet someone she could get him to say more than two words
to wich Coolidge replied, "You loose"
