- The first Republican to assume the
office, Lincoln was elected after Southern states had already
declared a
secession from the Union
- Within thirty days Lincoln was forced
to organize a Union Army
- Licoln was the first president to
sport a beard
- He grew the beard after receiving
a letter from a young girl who suggested his appearance would
improve if he did so
- Lincoln was the first Chief Executive
to sport a beard
- He was the first president who born
outside the original thirteen colonies.
- In 1863 he officially decreed Thanksgiving
a national holiday
- Just weeks after the surrender of
Robert E. Lee and the confederacy, Lincoln was shot in the back
of the head at close range while attending a play at Ford's Theater
in the capital Presidential Assassinations
- The assassin, John Wilkes Booth, a
popular actor of the day and Southern sympathizer, was later
killed by pursuers in a barn outside Washington
- Almost one hundred years later historians
would compile similarities between the Lincoln tragedy and the
John Kennedy assassination in 1963 Lincoln-Kennedy
