- Washington was born February 11, 1731.
The British Parliament changed to the Julian Calendar in 1750
when he was 19. In 1751 the new year began on January 1; thus
Washington was 19 on February 11, 1750, but didn't turn twenty
until February 11, 1752
- General Washington arrived 57 days
late for the inauguration in New York
- He borrowed $100 from Richard Conway
of Virginia to cover expenses to the inauguration
- George Washington was not paid a salary
for his service in the Revolutionary War, but he was compensated
for expenses of nearly $500,000
- Mr. Washington only vetoed two bills
in his eight year presidency
- He was the first president to call
out the militia when disgruntled corn farmers in Western Pennsylvania
threatened to riot after the government imposed a tax on whiskey
in 1791
- Washington did not have wooden teeth.
His dentures were made in New York from a combination of animal
bone,
lead and ivory
- Washington never lived in the White
House, as construction of the president's home would not be completed
until 1800. After their marriage however, George and Martha lived
on her plantation estate which was coincidentally named The
White House.
- George Washington died two years after
his presidency
