- James Monroe lost his bid for re-election
to the Virginia legislature when he refused to serve complimentary
rum to potential voters at polling places
- He was the first president who served
as a senator
- After eight years of growth and prosperity,
the Monroe presidency was billed as "The Era of Good Feeling"
- Monroe was uncontested for re-election
in 1820
- During the War of 1812 the British
burned the White House, and all possessions were lost in the
blaze
- In order to refurbish the White House,
the Monroe's sold their furnishings to the government for $9,000
- On March 9, 1820, Maria Monroe was
the first daughter of a president married in the White House
- In 1818 President Monroe signed legislation
establishing the Flag of the United States
- On December 2, 1823 the president
proclaimed the Monroe Doctrine
- On May 11, 1819 he was the first president
to ride on a steamboat, The Savannah
