- Mrs. Adams was proceeded as First
Lady by her mother-in-law Abigail in 1797
- In similar fashion to their in-laws,
the Adams' freed all their slaves shortly after their marriage
- From age 21-42 she suffered seven
miscarriages, with four children surviving to adulthood
- She often read Plato in Greek to her
children, and tutored them in French as well as English
- Her son John was the only male child
of a president married at a ceremony at the White House in 1828
- Along with Dolley Madison, she helped
to raise funds for the building of the Washington Monument
- She was the author of many writings
and poems concerning anti-slavery and pro-women views
- To pass the time as First Lady, she
translated a number of books from French to English
- Born in England, Louisa holds the
distinction of being the only foreign-born First Lady
- She and John Quincy were married at
a ceremony in England in 1797, the first year of John Adams presidency
- They celebrated their golden wedding
anniversary in 1847
