family cook, she grew up in Texas the daughter of the richest
man in town
- She caught the eye of penniless Lyndon
Johnson who proposed on the first date
- She borrowed $10,000 from her inheritance
to finance his first bid for Congress
- Toady, Lady Bird owns numerous radio
and television stations in Texas
- As First Lady, she began a "Highway
Beautification Program" calling for the elimination of all
billboard advertising but the measure failed
- She and her friends often boarded
buses and traveled the highway stopping to pick up litter, and
plant flowers
- During one trip her troupe stopped
for lunch at a Howard Johnsons Restaurant on the PA Turnpike
- When the waitress was asked what it
was like waiting on Mrs. Johnson, she replied she thought Howard's
wife was rather nice, never realizing it was Mrs. Lyndon Johnson
- Lady Bird convinced her husband to
persuade Congress to appoint a permanent curator to the Mansion
in 1965
- As First Lady her daily routine of
exercise usually consisted of a brisk morning walk of the grounds,
a few games bowling with her daughters, fifty laps in the pool,
and an afternoon of relaxation by sunbathing from the White house
roof
