- A ninth-generation descendent of Pocahontas,
the widow Galt met, courted, and wed the president in less than
a year
- They were married at a ceremony in
Washington
- When the president suffered a stroke
in 1918, it was Edith who decoded war messages and issued orders
to the military in the name of her husband
- In an effort to save manpower during
the war, sheep were used to mow the White House lawn and the
wool sold to benefit the Red Cross
- In order to find more time to be with
her husband, Edith took up the game of golf; thus becoming the
first First Lady to
