JOHN AND ABIGAIL ADAMS [1797-1801]
Charles Adams, born May 29, 1770, was the first child of a President to die while his father was in office; November 30, 1800. Mrs. Adams holds the distinction of the first wife of a President and mother of another, John Quincy Adams, sixth president, born July 11, 1767.

THOMAS AND MARTHA JEFFERSON [1801-1809]
Mary Jefferson born August 1, 1778, was the only daughter of a president to die in the White House, April 17,1804. James Madison Randolph, son of Thomas and Martha Jefferson Randolph, was the first child born in the White House January 17, 1806; thus the only grandson of a President born there.

ANNA AND WILLIAM HENRY HARRISON [1841-1841]
Mrs. Harrison was the only wife of a President and grandmother of another, Benjamin Harrison, twenty-third president, born August 20, 1833.

FRANKLIN AND JANE PIERCE [1853-1857]
President-elect and Mrs. Pierce were involved in a train derailment while traveling through New England. They were uninjured, but their son Benjamin, 11, was killed on January 6, 1853.

ABRAHAM AND MARY TODD LINCOLN [1861-1865]
William [Willie] Lincoln was the first child of a presidential couple to die in the White House, February 20, 1862. Willie was embalmed and viewed in the Green Room. Mrs. Lincoln never re-entered the room for the duration of her stay at the White House.

GROVER AND FRANCES CLEVELAND [1885-1889] [1893-1897]
The Nestle Company named the Baby Ruth candy bar in honor of the Cleveland's first child Ruth, born between the president's two terms in 1891. Their daughter Esther was the only child of a presidential couple born in the White House, September 9, 1893 during the second term of the President.

THEODORE AND EDITH ROOSEVELT [1901-1909]
Quentin Roosevelt born November 19, 1897 was killed when his plane was shot down during Word War I, July 14, 1918.

CALVIN AND GRACE COOLIDGE [1923-1929]
Calvin Coolidge Jr. born April 13, 1908 died at the White House July 7, 1924 from complications arising from a blister on his foot after playing barefoot tennis.

JOHN AND JACKIE KENNEDY [1961-1963]
Patrick Kennedy born August 7, 1963 died two days after birth on August 9, 1963.
