- As the first vice president John Adams
had ho precident to follow and spent the majority of his time
devceloping proceedures and protocal which managed to irritate
members of Congress
- Adams managed to attend and or interfere
with most meetings and debates, causing some to refer to him
as "His Royal Rotundy" or "His Mighty Benign Highness"
- Adams himself didn't help matters
by stating, "One useless man is a disgrace, two a law firm,
three or more a Congress"
- After the British government imposed
a series of taxes on the colonies, he exclaimed, "Tea must
be renounced"
- He and his wife Abigail substituted
coffee for tea immediately thereafter
- George Washington arrived late for
the first inauguration, eight days after Adams had been sworn
in as vice president
- Adams, a Federalist who believed in
a strong central government, often commented on what her termed,
"The lack of the electorate to make resonable decisions
of government"
- He believed the presidency should
be a life term, and members of Congress should be granted seats
on a hereditary system
- He was elected the second president
in 1796, but lost reelection in 1800 President
