- Of all the people who weren't fit
to be vice president Spiro Agnew has to rank on every historians
short list
- He resigned from office in 1973 amid
speculation of corruption, bribery, and kick-backs while serving
as governor of Maryland, as well as a host of charges including
income tax evasion by the U.S. Department of Justice
- In order to save the integrity of
the vice presidency he resigned just minutes before pleading
nolo contendere to one count of tax evasion, although 40 plus
pages of criminal activity were read into his official court
record
- Agnew was fined $10,000 and placed
on probation
- Following his term of office he began
a speaking tour of the United States and later recanted his confession
saying he was pressured into the whole ordeal in order to take
the heat of Nixon and the Watergate investigation
- While in office he told off-color
jokes, make ethnic slurs, and once stated that he didn't campaign
in the inner cities because, "If you've seen one slum you've
seen them all"
- Agnew was often referred to by the
Nixon staff as "the clown"
- He was replaced by Gerald Ford
