- With the second highest umber of votes,
Aaron Burr was declared vice president after losing the presidential
contest to
Jefferson in 1800
- Burr had a long running feud with
Alexander Hamilton which culminated in a duel in New Jersey where
Hamilton was killed
- Although dueling was legal, public
outcry over Burr's actions prompted Jefferson to look for a replacement
in 1804
- Burr left office and attempted to
establish a coalition of Midwestern states and territories to
form their own country
- After he vowed to eliminate Congress
and kill the president, he was tried for treason, but acquitted
- During his political career he is
credited with founding the corrupt Tammany Hall political machine
in New York
- Burr died on his eightieth birthday,
the same day his second wife's divorce was finalized on the grounds
of adultery - his
- Burr was rumored to have fathered
an illegitimate son, Martin Van Buren, eighth president
