- Calvin Coolidge was the third vice
president elevated to the presidency upon the death of Warren
Harding in 1923 Presidential Death in Office
- Coolidge was described as a man who
did little and said less, but as governor of Massachusetts he
called in the state militia to restore order after Boston police
went on strike
- He reached national prominence when
he stated, There is no right to strike against the public safety..."
- Coolidge enjoyed his time as vice
president because he said it never interfered with his mandatory
eleven hours of
sleep a day
- When he was assured that Harding,
who fell ill while on the last leg of a trip on the West coast,
was recovering comfortably, he left to visit his father in Vermont
- While there he was informed of the
president's death and was administered the Oath of Office by
his father, a notary public and magistrate President
