  • Charles Dawes purchased a small utility company that became a huge success enabling him to finance a career in banking and finance
  • He funded and organization known as the Minutemen of the Constitution which in essence was a vigilante group hired to disrupt the activities of labor unions
  • During World War I he was assigned chief purchasing agent for the army and when members of Congress questioned his exuberant purchases he cried out, "Hell and Maria," a quote he was forever identified with
  • After the war he was appointed to a commission to restore Europe's economy that became known as the Dawes Plan, and in 1952 he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize
  • As vice president he pulled a blunder that cost his party the nomination of Charles Warren as attorney general
  • Democrats called for a vote on the controversial Warren while Dawes was at his hotel taking an afternoon nap
  • Even though he rushed back to the chambers he was too late to cast a tie-breaking vote and confirm Warren
