- Fairbanks was a multimillionaire,
making most of his fortune as a lawyer representing the railroads
and buying as much stock as he could afford
- During his political campaigns he
offered free ride on the railroad to his supporters
- He was considered a front runner for
vice president with McKinley in 1896, but declined the position
stating her didn't want to be buried in the obscure position,
and had his eye on the presidency upon McKinley's retirement
in 1904
- Had he taken the nomination he would
have been president upon McKinley's assassination
- He took the vice presidency for Roosevelt
in 1904 assuming he would be the presidential nominee in 1908
- Roosevelt nixed his chance when he
hand-picked Taft and Sherman as the nominees
- Fairbanks died one year after his
term
- A group of citizens renamed their
Northern village, Fairbanks, in his honor
- The village was part of a territory
that eventually became the state of Alaska
