- Hannibal Hamlin spent most of his
vice presidency at his home in Maine and appeared in the senate
just long enough to open the session and leave
- At age 55 during the Civil War he
enlisted for guard duty and doubled as a cook for the Maine Coast
Gaurd never rising above the rank of private
- During the election a clever campaign
slogan appeared AbraHam Lincoln
- Hamlin was dropped from the ticket
in favor of Andrew Johnson, a political move to unify voters
for Lincoln's reelection by chosing a Southerner and a Democrat
to boot
- He was elected to the senate after
his term and later served as Ambassador to Spain
