- As a member of the senate Hendricks
openly opposed the Thirteenth, Fourteenth, and Fifteenth Amendments
that dealt with freedom for slaves as well as voting rights and
citizenship
- He was the running mate of Sam Tilden
in highly disputed election of 1876, and even though Cleveland
did not want him on the ticket in 1884, delegates gave him the
vice president spot claiming he deserved it
- After the election, the senate convened
to pick a pro tem to replace Hendricks who was now vice president,
but he insisted there was no need for a replacement
- Upon his death in office the next
two succession lines to the presidency were vacant
