- Garret Hobart was the sixth vice presidents
to die in office Vice Presidential Death
in Office
- He was a corporate lawyer and exceptional
fund raiser for the party and thus had no political experience
before becoming vice president
- He had a fear of public speaking and
avoided public and senate orations
- He did rally support for the Spanish-American
War effort, and was so adamant that we invade Cuba, McKinley
used Hobart's pen to sign the declaration of war
- Following the war Mckinley was uncertain
about the fate of the Philippines, and was probably influenced
in his decision by Hobart and the senate to add the islands as
U. S. territory
- Hobart a year before McKinley's renomination
in 1900
