- Lyndon Johnson called John Kennedy
"Sonny-boy" and his staff refereed to him as that "little
rich kid"
- Johnson had intentions of gaining
the Democratic nomination in 1960 and ask Kennedy to run with
him, but surprisingly waited until Kennedy all but had the nomination
wrapped up before entering the race
- After Kennedy won the nomination members
of his staff, including his brother Bobby, were against the idea
of suggesting Johnson for vice president
- Johnson could deliver Texas and most
of the South however, and was selected as the man for the number
two spot
- In the closest election until 2000,
Kennedy/Johnson won by less than 500,000 votes
- As vice president Johnson drew up
a list of duties and chairmanships he expected the 'Kennedy boys"
to approve, but the president ignored his correspondence
- There was no love lost between Johnson
and the Kennedys, and when it became apparent LBJ was pretty
outspoken toward them, they began to refer to Johnson as "Uncle
Cornpone"
- Johnson was the fourth vice president
elevated to the presidency President Lyndon
Johnson through the assassination of the incumbent in 1963
