- Marshall was a country lawyer from
Indiana who married at age 41 and entered politics at age 50
- He was elected as governor of his
state and later nominated to run with Wilson in 1912
- If known for nothing else, his wit
and humor kept him shoulders above the rest
- He once stated that he knew a woman
who had two sons, one joined the navy and went to sea while the
other became vice president; neither was heard from again
- Marshall coined the phrase, "What
this country needs is a really good five cent cigar"
- He served two terms with Wilson, but
refused to conduct cabinet meetings in the president's absence
- When Wilson suffered a stroke he stated
that he had no intention of taking over the duties of the presidency
- When Calvin Coolidge was elected vice
president in 1920, he sent him a telegram saying, "Please
accept my sincere sympathies
