  • He was elected as governor of his state and later nominated to run with Wilson in 1912
  • If known for nothing else, his wit and humor kept him shoulders above the rest
  • He once stated that he knew a woman who had two sons, one joined the navy and went to sea while the other became vice president; neither was heard from again
  • Marshall coined the phrase, "What this country needs is a really good five cent cigar"
  • He served two terms with Wilson, but refused to conduct cabinet meetings in the president's absence
  • When Wilson suffered a stroke he stated that he had no intention of taking over the duties of the presidency
