- Levi Morton declined the vice presidential
spot with James Garfield in 1880, and upon his assassination
would have become president
- He had hoped to be named Secretary
of the Treasury, but Garfield died before completing his cabinet
- Morton was a wealthy banker and had
strong ties with Wall Street
- He only served one term in Congress
before being named Ambassador to France
- As vice president he insisted on being
as fair as possible, and sometimes antagonized members of his
own party
- They refused to support him for renomination
as vice president, but Benjamin Harrison lost the election anyway
- He served one term as governor of
New York after his vice presidency
