- Van Buren was elected governor of
New York, but within months of taking office he resigned and
accepted the position of secretary of state for Andrew Jackson
- When he was nominated as Ambassador
to England, Vice President John Calhoun used his tie-breaking
vote in the senate to nix the nomination Vice
President John Calhoun
- Calhoun would later resign the vice
presidency, whereupon President Jackson chose Van Buren as his
running mate in 1832
- Van Buren did little as vice president
and rarely offered an opinion on any matters of the day
- Van Buren was the eighth vice president,
and in 1836 was elected the eighth president
President Martin Van Buren
- Martin was rumored to have been the
bastard child of Aaron Burr, third vice
president, a frequent visitor to a tavern owned by his father
in New York - also referred to as such in the diary of John Quincy
Adams
