  • Van Buren was elected governor of New York, but within months of taking office he resigned and accepted the position of secretary of state for Andrew Jackson
  • When he was nominated as Ambassador to England, Vice President John Calhoun used his tie-breaking vote in the senate to nix the nomination Vice President John Calhoun
  • Calhoun would later resign the vice presidency, whereupon President Jackson chose Van Buren as his running mate in 1832
  • Van Buren did little as vice president and rarely offered an opinion on any matters of the day
  • Van Buren was the eighth vice president, and in 1836 was elected the eighth president
