- Stevenson began his political career
by vigorously campaigning for Stephen Douglas and against Abraham
Linclon
- He was elected to two terms in Congress
before his vice presidency which he later stated was a position
not worth trying for
- He ran for another term, however,
with William Jennings Brian who lost in 1900 to William McKinley
and Theodore Roosevelt
- He is the grandfather of Adlai Stevenson
who ran against Dwight Eisenhower
- As assistant postmaster general in
Cleveland's first term he fired forty thousand republican postal
workers
