The White House
- The East Room
The East Room is the largest room in the White House.
At the time of the Adams occupancy
of the Mansion in 1800, the room was still unfinished and without
a roof.
Mrs. Adams used the room as a place
to hang the family laundry to dry.
Finally completed in 1829, President
Jackson first decorated the room at a cost of $9,000.
On the wall behind the piano hangs
the famous Gilbert Stuart portrait of George Washington.
The East Room is used for after dinner
entertainment, but also served a multitude of family purposes.
The Teddy Roosevelt children used the
room as a roller skating rink, and on one occasion the president
staged a boxing match here.
During the Ford administration daughter
Susan held her senior prom in the East Room.
