The White House
- The Lincoln Bedroom
The actual location of the Lincoln Bedroom, as part of the second
floor private quarters, was originally used by President Lincoln
as a study.
During the Civil War he used the room
to chart progress of the Union Army, quite often adorning the
walls with maps and strategies of anticipated battles.
Measuring eight foot long by six feet
wide, the bed was housed in a guest room and was not part of
the original decor of the room. It is very likely Lincoln never
slept in the bed himself.
The Lincoln Bedroom as it is known
today, was first inspired during the Roosevelt renovation of
1902.
Grace Coolidge reportedly ordered the
bed dismantled and reassembled in her sleeping room in 1923.
The Lincoln Bedroom is the most often
requested guest room for visitors to the White House.
