The White House
- The Yellow Oval Room
The Yellow Oval is located above the Blue Room in the second
floor private quarters.
Although still uncompleted, President
John Adams held the first presidential reception here in 1801.
Dolley Madison first decorated the
room in yellow damask in 1809.
After receiving an allocation from
Congress, Abigail Fillmore purchased books for the White House
and converted the room into the first presidential library in
1851.
It is said that Mrs. Benjamin Harrison
displayed the first family Christmas Tree from here in 1889.
Still retaining its color, the decor
of the room was changed during the Kennedy Administration in
the style of Louis XVI of France.
The Yellow Oval Room is still used
as a reception area for guests of the First Family.
Doors from the Yellow Oval Room lead
to the Truman Balcony on the South Side of the Mansion.
